The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is the successor to the Redmi Note 2 which eventually never made it to India. Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 was launched in November End in China and in a matter of just 3 months is ready to make it’s debut in India. While the Xioami Redmi Note 2 was launched on 13 August 2015 in China.
It is a welcome news for the Xiaomi Fans who were expecting the smartphone back in December 2015 when Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note Prime which is not doing too great for the price and specs it commands.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 : Preview and Thoughts
Build Quality and Design – The smartphone comes with a metallic body and offers much better build quality compared to the earlier models. The device measures 8.65 mm in thickness and has a weight of 165 grams.
There is a gloss chrome rim around the edge of the smartphone at the front of the smartphone which makes it more safe when placed face down or in an event of free fall. Though it also is a bit inconvneint while talking on the phone before you get used to it.
Xiaomi has done a great job in terms of design and finish of the Redmi Note 3 with Metal build attention to details touches. It is much better if we compare it to the Xiaomi Mi4i or the Xiaomi Redmi Note Prime. The Gold variant looks best out of the lot and rightly Xiaomi is selling it from its own website Mi.com and has given the other colors to major e-retailers.
The redmi Note 3 comes with a sim ejector tool , 10 Watts charger , Data Cable and an instruction booklet.
Competition – With Leeco LE 1S and the Huawei Honor 5X recently getting launched there were lots of buyers who bought these metallic smartphones which also offers good build quality. The other major selling smartphone in this price range is the recently launched Lenovo K4 Note.
Battery Life – The battery capacity is one of the significant talking point for the smartphone with 4050 mAH capacity, it has a 690 Wh/L high energy density to offer long battery life and longer recharge cycles. The battery comes with fast charging feature and can charge upto 50% in just 60 minutes.
Fingerprint Scanner – The other major highlight for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is the fast fingerprint scanner which Xiaomi boasts is one of the most responsive sensors out there and can unlock the device in 0.3 seconds.
Display – Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 comes with 5.5 inch screen size with Full HD resolution (1920*1080) with a pixel density of 401 PPI. Xiaomi has used some kind of hard glass protection on the screen but not specified which is it whether the Gorilla Glass or Asahi Glass.
The display also comes with Xiaomi Sunlight Display hardware feature which improves the visibility of the screen under direct sunlight.
There is also a night mode on the smartphone which reduces the screen brightness and harshness for night time reading.
Processor – The smartphone runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 (6 Core- 64 Bit processor) clocked at 1.8 Ghz. Snapdragon 650 is a monster with near flagship performance, it scored above 75000 in the Antutu benchmark.
It has 2 Cortex A-72 Cores running on clock speed of 1.8 Ghz and has 4 Cores Cortex A-53 which run on 1.4 Ghz. The GPU is adreno 510 which is quite capable and performs much better when compared to GPU on Helio X10( Le 1S) or MTK 6753 of Lenovo K4 Note.
The performance is quite similar to the Snapdragon 808 which has a similar score on Antutu and comes with smartphones like the LG G4 and the Google Nexus 5X.
This is what makes the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 better when compared to the Huawei Honor 5X, LE 1S and Lenovo K4 Note. Processor is the heart of the smartphone and Xiaomi redmi Note 3 does come with a bigger heart than the competition.
Camera – The smartphone comes with a 16 Megapixel camera which is equipped with PDAF( phase detection autofocus) and a Dual LED flash for taking clear images.
As per Xiaomi the camera comes with a 0.1 Second autofocus capability and the Snapdragon 650 has dual image signal processor which makes better imaging possible.
The camera also supports 1080 P video recording and also has support for time lapse as well as slow motion recording with 120 FPS. The Redmi Note 3 can also record 4K video using the Google Camera App, the Snapdragon 650 processor makes it possible to record the 4K Videos on the smartphone. It is amazing to have this feature in such low price smartphone.
The front camera is also a 5 MP shooter for taking good looking selfies.
There is fingerprint scanner selfies support to take selfies with rear camera, which help you take selfies when you gently press the fingerprint scanner button at the back.
Storage and Ram – Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 comes with 16 GB / 2GB RAM version and with 32 GB / 3GB RAM version. The storage can be expanded by another 32 GB on either of the smartphones. There is a hybrid Sim card slot on the Xiaomi redmi Note 3 that means you can either use a second sim card or use the memory card. The expandable storage is really low considering lot of smartphones are offering 128 GB of SD card support.
Connectivity – The smartphone runs on Android Lollipop with MIUI 7.0 on top of it and comes with smooth performance with good hardware and software optimization. The smartphone is dual sim and has support for 4G LTE bands in India along with the native 3G and 2G
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 comes with support of all Indian 4G LTE bands ( it has a Category 7 LTE Modem) with support for 3,5, 40 , 41 bands and it also supports VOLTE.
The Lenovo K4 Note is another smartphone which have support all these bands. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has support for WIFI and Bluetooth 4.1 though we have no support for NFC.
Operating System – The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Runs on the Android Lollipop OS along with the Xiaomi’s Custom MIUI 7.0. The MIUI feels smooth and easy with lots of options to customise and add themes and icons as per your taste. The home screen has a wallpaper carousel which help to change the wallpaper daily some we have seen on the Cool UI of Coolpad too.
The smartphone will be available in India in 3 different colors – Gold , Silver and dark gray.
Mi Protect – Xiaomi is providing the MI protect plan (insurance plan) for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 at Rs. 375 which also comes with home pick up and drop facility in case you damage your smartphone. Something worth taking in my opinion if you are not the careful type.
Which Model of Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 should you Buy 2GB RAM or 3 GB RAM ?
I would suggest to bear the one-time expense and go with the 32 GB and 3 GB RAM version. You are going to spend money once and I think you would be good to use it for 2-3 years considering a super powerful processor in a budget. Your Ram may become a limiting factor in future but in all day to day use, I don’t think even 2 GB is any lesser and will be enough for Android N and use in 2017.
If you are very tight on budget and can’t go any higher than 10K you can go ahead with the 2 GB RAM version it is going to work great and need for another 1 GB RAM is not going to stop you from playing your favorite games or do tasks. The processor is powerful enough to do the heavy lifting.
It is clear from the last couple of sales and sale done on 30 March 2016 that Xiaomi has no inventory of the 32 GB /3 GB RAM variant and are selling only the 2 GB /16 GB variant .
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has huge demand and even if Xiaomi would have launched 32 GB model Rs. 1000 higher they would have still sold huge volumes. Probably they made it too cheap and didn’t anticipated the demand for the smartphone correctly.
