Xiaomi at an even in China today launched the next generation of the 5.5 inch smartphones – Redmi Note 2 and the Redmi Note 2 Prime. The smartphones are the successor to the popular Redmi Note 3G and Redmi Note 4G.
Xiaomi launched 3 variants of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 (3G) 799 Yuan – Rs. 8,300
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 (4G LTE ) – Rs. 9,300
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Prime (4G LTE) Rs. 10,300 (Higher processor clock speed and storage)
The only difference between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 (3G) and (4G) version is the availability of 4G data connection, rest of the specs are same. Indian pricing can be different that indicated above.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is the successor of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G which currently is available for Rs. 7,999 in Indian market, after it got a Rs. 2,000 price discount last month.
The new smartphones are just unveiled in China and we may also get a launch of these smartphones in India in the coming event on 13 August 2015, where Xiaomi will be unveiling the new MIUI 7 for India.
Key Specifications for Xiaomi Redmi 2
Display – The smartphone features a 5.5 inch screen with a full HD screen with 1920*1080 resolution. The screen according to Xiaomi’s presentation has ability to lower the brightness upto 10X times for night time reading. The pixel density is 401 for the Redmi Note 2 display.
The older Redmi Note 4G also had the 5.5 inch screen with only HD display, a significant upgrade in the new smartphone.
The storage on the Xiaomi Redmi 2 (3G) and (4G) variant is 16 GB while on the Xiaomi Redmi2 Prime the storage is 32 GB.
Camera – The Smartphone offers Samsung OV 13 Megapixel camera at the back with f/2.2 aperture and 5 element lens with fast focus and led flash. As per Xiaomi it can focus as fast as 0.1 second.
The front camera on the smartphone has a 5 MP Omni-vision lens with beautify mode.
The smartphone has Dual Sim support along with 3G/2G/bluetooth and WIFI.
Processor – The Redmi Note 2 is powered by the Mediatek Helio X10 processor. It is an Octa-Core 64 Bit processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. (Both 3G and 4G Version)
The Redmi Note 2 Prime is also powered by the same processor but is clocked higher at 2.2 Ghz giving it a slight edge in performance, though not too substantial. The Antutu Score for the smartphone is insane for a budget smartphone and crosses 50,000.
I am a bit surprised as the same Mediatek processor also features on the HTC One M9. The HTC One M9 buyers who paid 50K for the smartphone will not feel too good about the flagship Mediatek processor appearing in a 10K -12K device.
Battery – The Battery capacity is 3060 mAH for the smartphone which is adequate for running the smartphone all day.
MIUI 7.0 – All the smartphones will run on Android Lollipop 5.0 OS and will have the latest MIUI 7.0 out of the box. The MIUI 7.0 brings on more themes and customization options and an improved Gallery App which lets users categorize photos based on people by utilizing face recognition technology.
The smartphone is thinner than the predecessor and measures 8.25mm Vs the 9.45 mm of the older Redmi Note. It is also lighter in weight Vs the older version, weighs 160 grams.
It will be interesting to see at what price point it is going to be launched in India and if it gets launched below 10K then can become a top seller quickly.
