Redmi Note 5 PRO Top Features, Specs, Details, Variants and Rivals
Xiaomi has launched 2 new phones in the Indian market, the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Redmi Note 5. I have already written an in-depth article about the Redmi Note 5 and how it fares Vs competition.
Coming to the Redmi Note 5 PRO, it is a more premium device that comes with better optics and performance in comparison to the Note 5.
The Redmi Note 5 is more affordable starts at Rs. 9,999, and is a performance beast with a great display and battery life.
On the other hand, the PRO has all above features but offers a faster SD 636 processor, a better selfie camera, and a Dual Rear camera.
Moreover, the Redmi Note 5 PRO is available on Flipkart, Mi.com starting 22 February (Thursday) from 12.00 pm (noon) in India.
Notably, the Pro variant comes in two storage/ram variant:
1. The 64 GB internal storage with 4 GB Ram, cost Rs. 13,999.
2. The 64 GB internal storage with 6 GB Ram, costs Rs. 16,999.
We will get to which variant is a better choice later, in conclusion.
Let’s deep dive and explore what Note 5 Pro has to offer us.
Top Features and Specs – Redmi Note 5 PRO
Design – Let’s Imitate
There are no sweeping changes to design, and it comes with a metallic back cover and an infinite display.
However, the most noticeable change is the presence of vertical dual rear cameras. The rear camera module is a replica of the iPhone X (Apple’s absurdly expensive flagship).
Imitation is not a bad thing, in fact, it is the sincerest form of flattery.
Further, the Note 5 Pro comes with a ubiquitous bezel-less display with curved edges.
Besides, Xiaomi says the back panel comes with Oleophobic coating to ensure fewer smudges and fingerprint marks on the metallic surface.
You can buy the Note 5 Pro in 4 color choices – black, gold, light blue, and the rose gold.
Also, it weighs 181 grams and has 8.05 mm thickness.
One of the important highlights of the new 5 series phones is the 18:9 aspect ratio, full-screen display. Notably, the 5.99 Inch screen comes with FHD+ (2160*1080 pixels) with a pixel density of 403 PPI.
Additionally, it has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, 84% NTSC color gamut, and a 2.5D curved glass surface.
Performance – A Faster SD 636
The Note 5 Pro is the fastest Note series phone ever made by the company.
But it is almost 70% faster in comparison to the Snapdragon 625 (used in Note 5).
On the Antutu Benchmark the Note 5 Pro scores close to 109,400 in comparison to 64,600 by the Note 5.
Further, the SD 636 comes with 4 Cortex A73 cores with a clock speed of 1.8 GHz whereas the 4 energy efficient cores have a clock speed of 1.6 GHz.
Also, Xiaomi is using a faster LPDDR4X ram in the Note 5 Pro that makes it more snappy in comparison to the standard version.
In a nutshell, the new Note 5 Pro is a beast regarding performance and unparalleled in this price range.
Dual Camera + 20 MP Selfie Camera
Apart from performance, the presence of superior camera differentiates the PRO version from the standard Note 5.
For selfies, it comes with a 20 Megapixel front camera with a dedicated natural tone flash.
Notably, the front camera has 1.0 μm lens with f/2.2 aperture and even comes with a face-unlocking feature.
Further, it uses the Sony IMX376 sensor 20 MP sensor and even has AI support (a first for Xiaomi phone) to click selfies with Bokeh effect.
There is Beautify 4.0 support that comes with special optimizations to retain Bindi and beard details. Secondly, it has Dual rear cameras with a 12 MP + 5 MP sensor to click incredible portrait shots.
The 12 MP lens uses the Sony IMX486 sensor and comes with f/2.2 aperture whereas the 5 MP lens has a Samsung sensor and comes with a f/2.0 aperture.
There is even Electronic image stabilization for videos. Moreover, the camera can record maximum 1080P videos.
Notably, the face-unlock feature for the device will roll out in March via software update.
Contrastingly, the MI A1 comes with a Dual 12 MP camera with one telephoto and one standard lens that makes it slightly better in comparison to the Note 5 Pro camera.
There are no surprises here as it comes with a 4000 mAH capacity battery like the more affordable Note 5. However, Xiaomi says it has Quick Charge 2.0 support to ensure rapid charging which is apparently missing from the more affordable standard version.
OS and Software
There are MIUI 9.2 custom ROM and the Android Nougat 7.1 offering a lag-free experience.
Besides, the MIUI 9 is lightning fast and comes with some nifty features like Dual Apps, Mi Drop, split screen, and stickers.
The phone comes with all the standard connectivity options such as 2G/3G/4G/ VOLTE/ WIFI and Bluetooth 5.0.
Moreover, it comes with hybrid Dual Sim support, lacks a dedicated micro-sd card slot.
Also, there is the presence of Micro-USB port, unlike the Mi A1 that comes with USB Type C port.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with some top of the line features and camera, display and performance upgrades justify the PRO tag.
- Great Bezel-less Display.
- Excellent Dual Rear Camera, and 20 MP Selfie Camera.
- Superb Performance – Snapdragon 636 and 4/6 GB RAM.
- Long Battery Life and Fast Charging support.
- No USB Type C Port.
- No Dedicated Memory Card slot.
Which Variant of Note 5 PRO to Buy?
If you are planning to buy the new Note 5 Pro, you can choose either the 6 GB ram or 4 GB Ram version; both come with 64 GB internal storage.
The 4 GB version costs Rs. 13,999, on the other hand, the 6 GB ram version sets you back by Rs. 16,999.
Besides, considering a price difference of Rs. 3,000 for the additional 2 GB ram, I would suggest going with the Rs. 13,499 version.
A lot of flagship phones like Samsung S8 or Google Pixel XL 2 comes with 4 GB ram, which is sufficient for any tasks or gaming.

Moto X4 or Moto G6
Another rival device the Moto X4 (costs Rs. 22,990) seems to be expensive, and at least on paper, the Note 5 pro is far superior.
However, the Moto X4 comes with an exquisite design and build and even has IP 68 rating, USB Type C, and 4K videos support.
Moreover, considering there is a significant price difference between the phones we can expect the upcoming Moto G6 to rival the Note 5 Pro and likely will have similar features as the Xiaomi device.
