The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite and Y1 Starts Getting MIUI 10 Update
Both the Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite were launched in India back in November 2017, and now the company has started rolling the latest OS update, as per some of the users.
The new OTA update (MIUI v10.2.1.0.NDKMIXM) has 507 MB size and fixes some issues like switching cameras during video calls. Also, it brings the latest Android Security patch to the users for improved stability and security.
Further, the MIUI 10 Global offers better notifications, fix for notification bar, recorder app, and status bar.
You can check for the update on your Redmi Y1/Y1 Lite by going into settings>About Phone> System Update.
The new MIUI 10 doesn’t bring the Android Oreo 8.1 to these phones but they still run on the Android Nougat 7.1 even after the update.
This is a bit sad as most users expect to get at least 2 years of software updates from Google when they buy a new phone. That’s all about the new update, can read more about the Y1/Y1 Lite below.

2/November/2017 – Xiaomi has unveiled a new series of smartphones today in India – Xiaomi Redmi Y Series. The company launched two new mobiles – Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite and Y1 at an event in New Delhi.

The new Xiaomi Redmi Y series targets the Young buyers looking for an affordable smartphone with a large display and an outstanding selfie camera. The Key Highlight of the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 is it’s 16 Megapixel selfie camera and the 5.5 Inch HD Display.
On the other hand, the Y1 Lite comes with a simple 5 Megapixel selfie camera but has the same build and design like the Redmi Y1. Both the phones will go on sale starting 8th November @ 12 PM on the Xiaomi’s official website and Amazon India as well.
Xiaomi Y Series Takes On Oppo and Vivo
Oppo and Vivo have been proliferating in the country thanks to focussing on the selfie segment, which was so far ignored by Xiaomi.
It is the first time Xiaomi has launched a mobile which focuses more on selfies than on the performance.
Xiaomi is now the number 2 brand in India with 22.3% market share (Samsung is number 1 with 22.8%) market share, eating some share from Oppo and Vivo will definitely help the brand become number 1 in the country.
Also, Xiaomi recently launched the Mi Mix 2 (Flagship) phone in the Indian market to help it have some share of the premium segment. It is likely that for the quarter ending Dec’17 we may see Xiaomi to become the top mobile company in India.
Let’s look at both the phones in detail below:
Xiaomi Redmi Y1 – A True Selfie Camera Phone
The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 is available in two variants and price starts at Rs. 8,999.
Selfie Camera – The Redmi Y1 has a 16 Megapixel front selfie camera which comes with a soft LED flash for better low light selfies. The front camera has a f/2.0 aperture and a 74.6-degree wide angle lens.
There are features like Selfie countdown down to capture selfies after few seconds of activating the camera and face recognition to improve the facial features. It also has a 5P lens with 36 beauty profiles and real-time beautification for the video calls. In a nutshell, it offers you almost everything that Vivo and Oppo have been offering to selfie enthusiasts.
Xiaomi said in the presentation that the camera uses a new pixel binning technology which helps de-noise the images and improves the clarity using software optimizations.
Other than the exotic selfie camera it also comes with a standard 13 Megapixel rear camera which has a f/2.2 aperture and PDAF (phase detection autofocus support).
Performance and Specs
Processor – Interestingly, Xiaomi has not forgotten the basics and has added the Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 Processor to the phone to keep things smooth. There is Adreno 505 GPU which is excellent for handling all the modern games at HD resolution.
Display – The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 comes with a 5.5 Inch display with HD resolution (1280*720) pixels and also has a 2.5D curved glass on top of it. The screen is also protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Design – The design is very similar to the Xioaomi Redmi 4 or 4A and is made from poly-plastic with a brushed metallic finish. At the back side, the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 comes with a fingerprint scanner which can unlock the device in 0.3 seconds. The mobile weighs 150 grams and has a thickness of 7.55 mm, which is not too much for a 5.5 Inch phone.
MIUI 9.0 – Explosively Fast
Moreover, the new Xiaomi Y1 and Y1 Lite come with a unique and faster experience offered by the MIUI 9.0. Xiaomi claims that the new Xiaomi MIUI 9 is as fast as the Stock Android and it beats the Samsung Touch Wiz UI easily.
The major upgrade compared to MIUI 8.0 is the app opening speed which is explosively fast to offer a much smoother user experience. Both the phones will come with the MIUI 9 along with the Android 7.1.2.
Also, Xiaomi is updating the Xiaomi Mi Max 2, Mix 2 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with the stable version of the MIUI 9 on 3rd November 2017.
The other smartphones like the Xiaomi Mi A1, Mi Max, Redmi 4, Redmi 4A and Redmi Note 3, Redmi 3s and prime, will get the update by the end of November. Apart from these, there are more phones on the list to get the update.
Top Features Which Makes MIUI 9 Desirable
- Fast App Launch times and smooth performance. Stays fast even after the phone is old.
- Split screen mode to launch two apps in window mode.
- Smart Assistant and Advanced Image search – help to find anything with ease.

Battery Life and Connectivity –
The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 comes with a 3080 mAH capacity battery which is smaller compared to other Xiaomi phones like Redmi Note 4 (4000 mAH). Though, it is sufficient to last all day with a good amount of usage.
Furthermore, the phone comes with a Dual Sim support and also has a dedicated slot to house the micro-sd card up to 128 GB capacity. Both the phones are also equipped with an Infra-red sensor to control other devices like TV.
Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite
Notably, The Redmi Y1 Lite is the watered down version of the Y1 and comes with a similar design and display.
Instead of having the 16 Megapixel front selfie camera, it sports a 5 Megapixel shooter for clicking selfies.
The rear camera is same with 13 Megapixel lens and also it comes with the same battery capacity, Dual Sim support and MIUI 9.
Also, the Y1 Lite is powered by the Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor and comes with the Adreno 308 GPU. Aforementioned, the Y1 Lite has a price tag of Rs. 6,999 and comes with just 2 GB of Ram and has 16 GB of internal storage which can be expanded to 128 GB using the Micro-sd card slot.
Notably, the Redmi Y1 Lite misses on the fingerprint scanner which is present on the Y1. The Xiaomi Y1 Lite will cannibalize the Xiaomi Redmi 4A in the market, though Xiaomi has not explicitly mentioned that they would discontinue the Redmi 4A.
Finally, The Xiaomi Redmi Y Series is a positive move by the Chinese brand to have the upper hand over Vivo and Oppo by offering an attractive selfie camera phone, without the eye-watering price tag.
