Micromax Launches 2 New Budget Phones to take on Xiaomi
Micromax owned Yu Televentures has come up with 2 new smartphones – Yureka S and Yunique Plus. While Micromax is a large player in smartphone business but lately have been feeling the heat from Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Meizu, and LeEco, adding to the distress, JIO has started offering cheaper smartphones and taking away the share from pure mobile companies.
To update, both the phones have gone on sale in retail market this week. The Yunique Plus is also now available on Amazon India. (Devices got listed on Yu official website on 22 Aug’16).
As the name suggests they are the successors to the respective models released last year. The Yureka S looks same as the Yu Yutopia, while the Yunique Plus has the same design as Yunique but comes with more RAM.
Yu Yureka S – Specs and Details
The phone features an anodized aluminum back with a polycarbonate material. The front looks clean with 5 Mp (f/2.2 aperture) front camera, sports on-screen buttons with sizable bezel at the front.
The side has a huge camera sporting 13 MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture and a LED flash.
The phone flaunts a 5.2-inch FHD display, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Powering the phone is Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 Chipset along with Adreno 405 GPU and 3 GB of ram.
It has 16 GB of internal storage along with expandable memory option up to 32GB.
Egregiously the phone runs on dated Android Lollipop 5.1, there’s no information whether it will get updated to Marshmallow 6.0 or to Android Nougat 7.0!
Fueling the device is a decent 3000 mAh battery which the company claims can give up to 450h of standby time and 9h of talk time.
Yunique Plus – Specs and Details
The smartphone has a similar design as Yunique which was launched last year. The Yunique Plus sports a Sleek and Elegant design with an 8.3 mm thick polycarbonate body.
The front side has a 2 MP camera with f/2.2 aperture. The back sports the signature YU Saturn rings around the 8 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture. Similar to Yureka S this phone too sports a speaker grill at the rear.
The Yunique Plus has a 4.7 HD display that comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor along with 2 Gb of Ram.
The phone features 8 GB of internal storage with expandability option up to 32 GB. The Yunique Plus features mediocre 2000 mAh battery.
Yunique Plus too runs on Android Lollipop and no word on an update to Marshmallow 6.0 or Nougat 7.0.
Both the phones feature 4G/LTE, 3G, GPS, GPRS, and all the basic sensors including Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, G- sensor.
The Yureka S costs ₹12,999 and the latter Yunique Plus is available for ₹6,999. The former is available in Grey and the Latter is available in Black. Both the phones are available at the retail stores across India.
Considering the price the Former Yureka S competes with the biggies like Redmi Note 3, Leeco Le 2, Moto G4. While the latter Yunique Plus will compete with Redmi 3S and Coolpad Note 3 Lite, Lenovo K5 Plus etc.
Yu Smartphones Success in India
We will have to wait and see how successful are the new Yu smartphones, however, the only silver lining I see in the Yu Portfolio is the Yu Yunicorn which is better among most of the Yu smartphones in my experience.
Yu Televentures was set up in order to deal with competition flash sales and create online hype, it delivered well initially due to the Micromax strong presence but poor quality products and appalling after sales service has ruined what could have been an Indian OnePlus.
