Recommendations

Xiaomi has launched new killer Note series phones and it is hard to find any faults with these offerings at the price.

The addition of an AMOLED screen in their mid-range phones is a cherry on the cake for the buyers.

You and I both know that 5G is not coming any time soon – Read – When is 5G Launching in India for JIO, Airtel, VIL, and BSNL but if you live in a Metro you may experience it may be sometime next year.

The lack of 5G especially for the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max can be a deal-breaker for some buyers in the 20k price range who can gravitate to MI 10i or the Realme X7 that offers 5G support in the same price range. However, the Mi 10i lacks the AMOLED panel that is offered by the Note 10 Pro Max – that’s a Catch 22 situation.

If you are buying these phones, don’t worry about the 5G support as there is still plenty of time for 5G to launch in India, especially for the non-metros.

Redmi Note 9 and Redmi 9 Series

04-September-2020 – Xiaomi has launched the new Redmi Note 9 series on 12th March with two phone models namely Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (Xiaomi is even copying the weird naming from the iPhone 11 Pro Max). Notably, Xiaomi has not launched the Redmi Note 9 that the company can launch in the coming weeks.

Rather than doing a major launch event, it was restricted because of the outbreak of the Coronavirus. The event was an online stream on the Youtube channel.

As the tagline says # Pro cameras Max Performance, Xiaomi is banking on faster performance and class-leading cameras on the new phones.

The Redmi Note 9 Series is available in an impressive color range: Aurora Blue, Glacier White, and Interstellar Black. To give clarity, let’s talk about both the phones launched at the event.

Redmi Note 9 Pro

It is rightly called ” The Performance Beast” as it gets its power from Qualcomm SD720G processor, a massive 5020mAh battery, 48MP Quad camera set up, 6.67″ FHD+ display, and much more to its credit. The phone will be available on 17th March @ 12 pm. Let’s talk about the detailed specs of this phone.

Xiaomi-redmi-note-9-pro

Design

The Redmi Note 9 Pro offers a Glass front and Glass back body with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The dimensions of the phone are 165.8 x 76.7 x 8.8 mm and weigh ~209 grams. It comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and P2i Splash-proof nano-coating as well as anti-fingerprint, anti-oil protective coating.

Display

The screen is 6.67 inches and comes with an FHD+, dewdrop display. The screen resolution is 1080 x 2400 pixels with a 20:9 ratio and approximately 395 ppi density.

With this configuration and 450 nit brightness, it offers an indulging cinematic viewing experience. The display is adaptable to the following modes: standard, sunshine, night, color temperature adjustments to suit the environment.

Storage variants and Price

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is available in the following variants and prices:

  • 4 GB RAM + 64 GB Internal storage at a price of Rs. 12,999
  • 6 GB RAM + 128 GB Internal storage at a price of Rs. 15,999

Also, it has a dedicated microSD card slot that can make more room for your stuff with a 512GB Expansion capacity. The RAM and storage is LPDDR4x and UFS2.1.

Processor

Fueling the phone is the new powerful Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G (2x Gold 2.3GHz + 6x Silver 1.8GHz). The GPU is Adreno A618.

The processor is not an upgrade in comparison to the Redmi Note 8 Pro that comes with the MediaTek Helios G90T Octa-Core processor.

In fact, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G used in the POCO X2, MTK G90T used in the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the SD 720G offer nearly the same performance.

All three phones score close to 280,000 on the Antutu benchmarks and it is hard to differentiate in terms of real-life performance. However, for gaming, the G90T offers slightly higher frame rates but due to the 12 Nm manufacturing process generates more heat and a bit more thermal throttling. So, it will not be right to pick these phones based on the processor prowess.

Also, the 720G sports a 5th Gen AI Engine and is made using the 8 nm fabrication.

Operating System

We are getting the latest OS out of the box and the phone boots on Android 10 OS with MIUI 11 skin.

Cameras

The rear Quad camera set up is 48 MP(f/1.8) wide main lens + 8MP (f/2.2) Ultrawide angle lens + 2MP(f/2.4) Macro lens + 2MP (f/2.4) depth sensor.

The cameras are arranged in a square box and support Night mode, PDAF, HDR, LED Flash, AI feature adjustments and Gyro-EIS. The phone can record videos max at 4K@30fps. Sadly, there is no 4K, 60 FPS

The front is mounted with a 16MP In-Display Camera with AI Portrait mode, HDR and 120fps slo-mo along with normal video recording at 1080p @30fps.

Battery

Fueling the device is a massive 5020mAh battery which can keep it running for all day easily even with heavy usage. Xiaomi has slowly moved from 4000 mAH battery that they had in the Note 5, Note 6 and Note 7 to now 5000 mAH. The extra battery makes the phones a bit bulkier and less comfortable to hold and use with one hand.

Also, it comes with an 18W fast charger support.
