Vivo X21 India Launch, Top Features, and Specs

Vivo has launched a new phone in the Indian market that is one of its kind and comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Previously, at the mobile world congress, Vivo showcased this new technology that the company has developed along with Synaptics using the Clear ID 9500 and an AMOLED Display.

Vivo X21 is Innovative But Expensive, Competes With OnePlus 6

The in-display fingerprint scanner is the key highlight of the device and can unlock the phone in about 0.7 seconds which is much slower in comparison to the traditional fingerprint readers.

Nevertheless, it is a very cool technology that changes how we interact with our phones, and we applaud Vivo for being first to bring it to the market.

Notably, the under display fingerprint scanner technology only works with OLED displays and is not compatible with the IPS LCD panels, so the initial phones are bound to be a bit expensive as they use the OLED panel which usually costs more.

Apart from the exceptional fingerprint technology it even comes witan an AK4376A Hi-Fi audio chip that improves the sound quality both from the speaker as well as output from the headphone jack, ideal for audiophiles.

The phone is available for purchase from Flipkart and costs Rs. 35,999 only the black color variant.

The new Vivo phone comes with a glass back cover that is reflective, and at the front, it has a large display with the notch cut out at the top. At the back, there are Dual rear cameras aligned vertically, and a Dual LED flash.

The phone has curved edges to improve the grip on the otherwise slippery surface. The phone is sleek and measures just 7.4 mm in thickness and weighs only 156 grams.

The Vivo X21 comes with a large 6.28 Inch Display with AMOLED panel offers excellent viewing angles and vivid colors. It comes with the infamous notch that is now becoming ubiquitous and has a 19:9 aspect ratio. The display covers almost all of the front as it has an insane 85.2% screen to body ratio.

It comes with a 2280*1080 FHD+ display with 402 PPI which makes it great for reading as well as watching videos.

Powering the phone is the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor that comes with 14 Nm manufacturing process and has 8 cores architecture. Additionally, there is Adreno 512 GPU that comes with great performance for games and graphics-intensive tasks.

The Snapdragon 660 scores 133800 on the Antutu benchmark test whereas it scores 1588 on the Geekbench on the single core test and 5613 on the multi-core test.

Comparingly the OnePlus 6 scores over 2,60,000 on the Antutu and 2477 on the Geekbench Single Core test, and 9023 on the multi-core test.

The SD 660 is no match in comparison to the SD 845 processor which is around 2X faster in comparison to the SD 660.

OS – The Vivo X21 comes with the Android Oreo 8.1 along with the Vivo’s custom skin Funtouch OS 4.0. Also, Vivo is claiming that the phone will even get the Android P update.

Storage and RAM –  The phone comes with 6 GB Ram and has 128 GB storage that is expandable up to 256 GB using the micro-sd card. The company has not launched the 64 GB version of the phone, but it may launch in the coming months.

Furthermore, the Vivo X21 comes with the Dual rear camera setup and has a primary camera with 12 Megapixel (f/1.8 aperture and 1.4-micron lens) and a 5 Megapixel secondary camera with a f/2.4 aperture for depth sensing. There is also Dual Pixel phase detection auto-focus to ensure that the camera can focus swiftly and take pictures of moving subjects with ease.

Also, there is Optical image stabilization to improve the quality of images, and it can even record 4K videos at 30 FPS.

For selfies, it comes with a 12 Megapixel front selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. There is also support for AI beauty that improves the clicked images.

Another added advantage of the X21 is the Dual 4G VOLTE connectivity that ensures that you can use 2 4G sims at the same time. Also, it comes with the Bluetooth 5.0 support and even has the 3.5mm headphone jack.

However, Vivo is still using the legacy micro-USB port in this futuristic phone, and it lacks the presence of USB Type C found on most rival phones including the OnePlus 6.

Battery Life

The phone comes with a 3200 mAH battery that also has fast charging support. The X21 comes with dual charging chips that allow you to charge the phone from 0 to 100% in less than 90 minutes.

Comparison With OnePlus 6 & Concluding Thoughts

The most crucial difference in contrast to the Oneplus 6 is performance, the Snapdragon 660 (X21) is an excellent mid-range processor whereas the Snapdragon 845 (1+6) is one of the fastest processors on any Android phone.

The Oneplus 6 offers far superior performance in comparison to the Vivo X21, and it will also stay fast even for next 2-3 years. The SD 845 has a much higher performance in comparison to most mid-range processors, and we can easily say even after 2 years mid-range processors may not surpass the SD 845.

On the other hand, the Vivo X21 will be easily outdated in 2 years as the SOC is already a mid-range chip.

As we know the Oneplus camera is a B+ considering it is not in the same league of obtrusively expensive S9+, P20 Pro or the Google Pixel 2 XL. The Vivo X21 also offers a promising camera setup at the rear and front not too far from what you expect from Oneplus.

The phone is sleek and stylish looking, and the in-display fingerprint scanner with the Sci-fi unlocking animation is a head turner. But is the price justified for the Vivo X21, I don’t think so.

The Vivo X21 has a feature that is even not present on the Samsung or Apple flagships that costs way too much.

But at the same time are we willing to pay such a premium for this, I am not, I will choose performance over the fancy fingerprint scanner that takes a bit longer and more force to unlock than usual.

So Should You Buy the Vivo X21 for 36k?

A lot more phones are expected with this technology by the second half of this year including the OnePlus 6T.

It is in fact, an excellent strategy from BBK electronics, the company that owns OnePlus as well as OPPO and Vivo to launch Oneplus to create all the hype and sells it at an affordable price to keep the high-end market share.

At the same time launch, the Vivo X21 with a premium price for the innovation and make some money.

Either way, the X21 is not too different from the Nokia 7 Plus that costs Rs. 26,999 or you can even look at the Huawei Honor 10 that in my opinion is a better deal if you are willing to forego the tempting fingerprint scanner.
