Should You Buy New Micromax Smartphones?
The CEO and Co-founder, Rahul Sharma, took social media to confirm the news. He shared an emotional video that tries to capture the anti-China and “Vocal for Local” sentiment.
He talks about how they want to bring in the change and give Indian consumers a product made in India and made by an Indian company.
If you haven’t read my article – “Made in India Smartphones- A reality Check,” it is a must-read to understand how phones are made in India or assembled in India.
Let’s first look at the new mobiles and later discuss whether you should spend money on these.
Considering the price point, the phones launched by Micromax are a steal. They are affordable and tick all the right boxes. Having stock Android without bloat and ads is unmatched in this price range.
I will blindly pick the Micromax phones over Xiaomi or Samsung if they can offer painless after-sales service.
In 2014, when Micromax was the No. 2 player in the Indian mobile market, they were buying China-made mobiles and re-labeling them. There was little the company did to push Indian manufacturing, as it was cheaper to import from China and pocket the profits.
Not only that, they never really cared about the end buyer – the after-sales service was far worst than these Chinese players, and the product quality control, future updates, and bug fixes were non-existent.
The brand is now promising something different “A dream of a High-Quality phone that is made in India.”
Notably, there is anguish in India over what happened on the India-China border, and people want a good quality yet affordable, made-in-India products.
Is Micromax milking the “Made in India” situation?
Or is committed to creating a brand that can provide – quality products at low prices, decent after-sales service, and a good user experience.
The brand name “IN” itself positions them as an Indian company and appeals to the masses who want an India-made phone.
What are the company’s plans to offer customer service, and can they provide the promised software updates in the future?
A few years back, they launched a brand called “Yu,” and the phones were terrible; after-sales support and software updates were pathetic.
For buyers who have burned money on Micromax devices, it will take time for the brand to rebuild the lost trust.
You can buy the phones if you want to help the brand grow quickly.
